CITY OF ST. LOUIS ENDS PENSION NEGOTIATIONS St. Louis, MO – IAFF Local 73 has been informed that after only four meetings, the city has abruptly ended pension negotiations. Although we are disappointed by these actions, it comes as no surprise to us. For several months, our organization has been aware that Mayor Slay’s office has been meeting with individual alderman to rally support for his plan to take unilateral control of the Firemen’s Retirement System. This is a flawed plan that will only lead to years of litigation. The taxpayers of our great city cannot afford to finance another one of the Mayor’s lawsuits. In contrast, Local 73 has been proactive in seeking real cost saving solutions for our community. Last year, the union secured enabling legislation to overhaul the Firefighter’s disability system, saving the taxpayers over a $1 million in the first year. This legislation has been incorporated into Board Bill 175, sponsored by Alderman Joe Vaccaro. Board Bill 175 will save money immediately upon passage; however, it has been held up in committee at the Mayor’s order. Rather than saving the taxpayers money, the Mayor has chosen to play politics. Additionally, Local 73 is pleased to announce that we are seeking even more changes this year that will offset costs by over $5 million. These changes are highlighted by altering benefits for future employees that will lead to the long term sustainability and affordability of the system. Our initiatives total over $6 million in savings to our citizens. Local 73 will aggressively support and defend the brave men and women of the St. Louis Fire Department, who proudly serve our community.
